| Dienstag, 08-06-10 11:44 "Of Mums And Music" - or "Summer of `82" Well, what is it then, which makes "our festival" such a special one? It can be no doubt that it is, as all the other ones here said before, its people, its atmosphere, Venne as "the place where music lives" - the music itself, of course. As Colum puts it "all together in celebration of the music we love so well". But - for me, it's still someting else, something very special: The first time I came across folk music was back in the eighties, it must have been summer of 1982: one of these unforgettable, long and warm summers of that time... Sitting in the back of our family's car, driving to the beach of this wonderful Danish island, my sister and I where listening to Joan Baez` Super Gold Album, my Mum's favourite LP. At the age of 9, I wasn' able to understand English yet - but somehow I felt that this wonderful person - apart from her extraordinary voice - had something to tell. Of course, I wanted to know from my mother why she sang "where have all the soldiers gone"... And now I know what it is for me that makes folk music so special: of course I like the kind of music itself, I like singer songwriters writing and presenting their music themselves - but what I like most is that all of them have stories to tell me, or even they have something to say that has to be said, to be critized - or just even something to think or laugh about. And so - I have my book of "little journeys" - I keep in my mind: And I am sure that I "went down to the well with Meggie and Column to search for the Seven Seas", that Mike Brosnan took me away on a trip through is wonderful home country, that I could feel the wind and taste the salt of the North Sea while listening to Lawall. Cicle Nine made me dance, made me forget all stress and sorrow of daily routine - and I could not believe my eyes and ears, watching Tom McConville and Jens presenting such a great show. But all this is not half as much fun when listening to this music on your own - it is simply unforgettable, giving up together with all other fans, laughing, when Column showed us how complicated even the chorus of an English song can be. ;) Well, as he said: all together in celebration of the music we love so well! Thank you, dear musicians, for making us dream and taking us away with you on all these unforgettable journeys, for giving us the opportunity to be part of your life, your experience and your thoughts and feelings!
